CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home

October 5-11 is Fire Prevention Week
This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” is focused on safe use of the powerful batteries found in everyday devices. From phones and tablets to power tools, vacuums, lawn equipment, e-bikes, and even cars, lithium-ion batteries are part of modern life. But if damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to extreme heat, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.

Why it Matters
Lithium-ion battery fires burn hotter and spread faster than many other types of fires, and they can be difficult to extinguish. Prevention is your best protection.

SAFETY TIPS:

Buy Smart: Choose batteries with safety certifications such as UL, ETL, or CSA

Charge Safely:

  • Place batteries on a hard, flat, nonflammable surface while charging
  • Unplug as soon as the battery is fully charged
  • Avoid charging overnight or when you’re not home

Use the Right Equipment: Always use the charger and cords provided by the manufacturer. For replacements, purchase directly from the manufacturer or a trusted supplier.

Know the Warning Signs: Stop using the device if the battery smells strange, feels excessively hot, makes popping or hissing noises, bulges, or changes color.

Store with Care: Keep batteries away from direct sunlight, high heat, or freezing temperatures. Do not store them in vehicles during extreme weather.

RECYCLE RESPONSIBLY:

Never throw lithium-ion batteries in household trash or curbside recycling bins. Bring them to an authorized recycling site. Find a site at Call2Recycle.org

Stay Alert. Prioritize Safety.

The St. Anthony Police Department would like to remind all residents to stay alert and prioritize safety, for themselves and each other – on our roads, sidewalks, and school zones. Whether you’re walking, biking, or driving; safety is a shared responsibility.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY - Pedestrians remain among the most vulnerable road users. Please keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Use Crosswalks. Always cross at designated crosswalks or intersections where drivers expect to see pedestrians.
  2. Stay Visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in early morning or evening hours.
  3. Avoid Distractions. Keep phones down and stay alert while crossing streets.
Make Eye Contact. Be sure drivers see you before stepping into the road, never assume vehicle will stop.

BICYCLE SAFETY  - With more people biking for recreation and  commuting, it’s essential to follow the rules    of the road:

  1. Wear a Helmet. It’s one of the most effective ways to reduce head injuries.
  2. Obey Traffic Laws. Cyclists must follow the same traffic rules as vehicles, including stopping at stop signs and signaling turns when biking in traffic.
  3. Ride with Traffic, Not Against It. Use bike lanes.
  4. Be Seen. Use front and rear lights at night and wear reflective gear.
  5. Stay Alert. Watch parked cars opening doors and vehicles turning at intersections

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A SAFER COMMUNITY
The St. Anthony Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone on our roads – students, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. We encourage all residents to stay alert, be respectful, and look out for one another. Let’s start this school year safely! Safety is a shared responsibility for bikers, walkers and drivers.
