St. Anthony awarded Hennepin County tree grant, partnership with Tree Trust

Tree Trust

With support from a Hennepin County Tree Canopy Grant, the City of St. Anthony Village has partnered with Tree Trust, a local non-profit, to complete a tree inventory of the trees located within the public right of way this winter beginning Feb. 23, 2021.  Tree Trust will have staff and youth program participants from their Community Forestry and YouthBuild programs identifying boulevard tree species and entering them into a database. Tree Trust YouthBuild, a pre-apprenticeship program, offers the unique opportunity to gain hands-on training and earn a paycheck while attending high school. Young people, ages 16-21, alternate between an employment and life skills training week at Tree Trust and attending school.

There will be three crews made up of two to three youth program participants and one Tree Trust staff counting trees throughout St. Anthony.  All staff and crew members will be wearing high visibility vests with a Tree Trust logo and will be following COVID-19 precautions. Staff will be using tablets to enter tree species, diameter, and other notable information into a database. The data collected during this program will be used to begin the management plan to lessen the impact of the emerald ash borer, an invasive species that will kill up to 15% of our community’s trees.
